About Oral Medicine

Oral Medicine is a specialty within dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention and predominantly non-surgical (pharmacological) management of a range of oral mucosal diseases, odontogenic (tooth-related) diseases, salivary gland diseases, diseases involving the jaws and associated anatomical structures, oro-facial pain and oral manifestations of systemic diseases including oral health care of medically-complex patients.


Oral Medicine replaces the previously used terminology “Oral Diagnosis” in the current clinical practice.


This is a specialist clinical practice and patients need to bring a valid referral letter from their general medical practitioner (GP), general dental practitioner (Dentist) or other recognised specialist in order to make an appointment with an Oral Medicine Specialist.

Scope of Practice

Oral Medicine practices focus on the diagnosis and management of, but not limited to, the following groups of diseases/conditions -
